Energy Efficiency At Home: Ducts

Energy Star reports that in a typical house, 20-30% of the air moving through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts. If you have high heating and cooling costs, rooms in your house that are hard to heat or cool and places in the home that feel “stuffy,” you may have poorly functioning ducts.

Our Home Energy Evaluation will show you whether the duct work in your house is sealed properly and whether the ducts are blocked or turned too sharply restricting air flow.

Tips:

  • Seal the connections at all vents and registers and any places where the duct work is damaged.

  • Duct tape is actually not good for sealing ducts – it doesn’t last. Use mastic sealant or metal tape.
